Summer Beauty Essentials

Ahh! It’s that time of the year again: sunny days, warm nights and day drinking– its summer! This is a time to kick back, relax and have fun. In a perfect world I would be carefree and makeup-less all summer, but that’s not the reality. Thankfully, the sun loves melanin so there’s a natural and effortless glow that comes during this time of year. However, that doesn’t mean abandon your normal beauty regimen until Labor Day, just revamp it! A little bit of the right products can give you the perfect look without a full Kim K beat.

Here are my 5 summer beauty must-haves:

BB Cream

BB Cream is a step above tinted moisturizer but a step below foundation. Like I said, I would love to be makeup free everyday but sometimes, for work and other events, you need to throw some makeup on. BB cream is my happy medium because it evens out your skin without the fear that your makeup is going to melt off in the summer heat. My favorite is Bobbi Brown. It has SPF 35, which is perfect for protecting your face from summer sun while keeping just enough coverage.

Coconut Oil

Coconut oil might be the most import thing on this list. We all know coconut oil cures all (if you don’t you obviously live under a rock), but for the purpose of this list it’s the perfect body moisturizer. With lotion, you can be ashy three hours after leaving the house… but with coconut oil you’ll be good all day plus you’ll have a nice glow. You can also use it as a lotion alternative if you have acne prone skin because it balances oil production & heals scars. If you don’t  want to be caught slippin’ and by slippin’ I mean ashy… use coconut oil. (Warning: this is OIL; a little bit goes a long way. )

Highlighters are honestly my favorite makeup product ever. I love to glow!!! There’s already a natural glow that comes with being brown in the summer, so why not enhance it? My favorite highlighter right now is Mac’s “Gold Deposit.” However there are endless highlighter options. You can use anything from a gold eye shadow, loose pigment or liquid illuminator -the possibilities are endless.

Shine/ Oil Control

Pressed powder, oil blotting sheets, and mattifying/oil control setting spray. I know that technically isn’t one product, but they are all important. Yes, you want to glow this summer but you don’t want to be shiny. As someone with oily skin, I go to great lengths to not look like a grease monster at all times. There are many products to combat shine, but my favorite is pressed powder because it gets rid of oil while adding a thin layer of coverage. MAC’s pressed powder is light enough that if I use it three times a day on my T-Zone I don’t look cake-y.

Lip Gloss
The overall theme of summer is: “less is more.” Lip gloss is the perfect way to add shine and color to your lips without doing too much. Lip gloss comes in every shade humanly possible so feel free to experiment. Plus, reapplying lipstick in between all the day drinking you’re going to be doing is too much of a hassle. (:

Other important things to keep in mind especially during the summer are: try not to touch your face throughout the day, wash you face as often as possible, and moisturizer is your friend.

  1. Have to have blush in the summer! Keeps my face looking fresh even if I don’t have time to do my base xx Great post! Can you tell what are the highlighters you have in the highlighter photo, they all look so pretty x

  2. You’re so right about the coconut oil! There’s nothing worse than getting hype for wearing shorts and tanks only to leave the house without being properly moisturized! And my summer essential is a nice clay mask to keep the oiliness at bay!
