El Chucho DC

Over the past four years I’ve developed an obsession for Mexican food. I go through withdrawal if I don’t have some type of tortilla- salsa- cheese- meat- guac combo at least once a week. Mexican isn’t that  hard to do, but there are definitely some who do it better than others. I’ve tried many many different Mexican places in DC , and I finally think I’ve found my favorite: El Chucho.  The restaurant, located in Petworth, opened in 2012, with the goal of “serving dishes inspired by Mexican street food.”

My first time at El Chucho was for brunch. One Saturday my friends asked if I wanted to go to brunch. I NEVER turn down brunch, but the hangover I had that morning made me want to. What eventually got me out of bed was  El Chucho’s $21.95 brunch deal that included bottomless orange or hibiscus mimosas and an entree. $22 for brunch is unheard of, so I got my ass up and had to check it out. Entrees included a plethora of breakfast burritos, pancakes, chilaquiles, huevos rancheros, and many other dishes. The assortment was pretty decent for the price.

The place was super small but super cute. We were seated on their rooftop deck which offered fresh air and cool vibes. Because I was hungover my first time there, I didn’t get to fully experience everything, so I went again… the next day. This is when I really fell in love. There is nothing more perfect than sitting on a roof in 80 degree weather on a Sunday afternoon… Well that’s what I thought: enter food and drinks.

Margaritas are always good, I don’t think I’ve had a bad one every but El Chucho raises the bar. Their strawberry habenero margaritas are so good (like so so good.) They’re sweet with a little kick to them.Other notable items on their menu are:

Elote aka my favorite thing on the menu. I now compare all elote to their’s.

Tacos (Pictured are the al pasor and shrimp tacos but the chicken ones are really good too!)

Processed with VSCO with c1 preset

Queso Oaxaqueno Frito ( basically fried cheese)

Their flautas are also really tasty, they were just eaten before I could take a picture. (LOL).

The only thing that I’ve had there that isn’t that good is their chips and guac, which is disappointing. However, with everything else on the menu is tasty.

If you love Mexican as much as I do, grab your friends on a warm day and head to El Chucho. The good food and great atmosphere will keep you coming back. Also, check out their website for daily happy hour deals including 20% off tequila on Tuesdays.

What’s your favorite Mexican food place in DC?
